Welcome to our new conductor

We are delighted to welcome Matt Nicholls, choral conductor and Director of Music at Prior Park College, to the Chamber Choir from September of this year. Matt is kindly working with us whilst our usual Musical Director, Alexander Hamilton, is Acting Director of Music at the Cathedral.

Matt Nicholls trained as an organist and choral conductor and has performed in the UK, Europe, China and the USA. He studied music at Cardiff University, and the University of Cambridge, and is now an award-winning organist; appearing on Classic FM as well as giving recitals in concert halls such as St David’s, Cardiff, and many British cathedrals. As a choral conductor, Matt has worked with choirs (both sacred and secular) for BBC Radio broadcasts and contemporary composers such as Paul Mealor, Cecilia McDowell and Howard Goodall, and with groups such as VOCES8 and Harmonia Sacra.

Matt is also a composer and arranger, having had works performed by UK cathedral choirs and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales. As well as the above mentioned position of Director of Music at Prior Park College in Bath, Matt also teaches for Wells Cathedral School Summer Schools and performs regularly with the choirs of both Wells Cathedral and Bath Abbey. A busy freelance career as a piano and organ accompanist for choirs, musical theatre shows and soloists, as well as a conductor of choral societies, chamber choirs and school music groups makes it all the more of a privilege to have Matt at the helm of the chamber choir for an exciting term of cathedral services ahead!
